Thursday, October First 6:30-8:30

Uniquely Natural ($30)

705 S. Public Road, Lafayette

In this class you will learn how hypnosis works and gain skills in self-hypnosis. Self-hypnosis is a practical tool for melting away the stresses in our daily lives. Regular relaxation is necessary for health, peace of mind and creative living. You may chose to include 20-minute self-hypnosis, mind-calming sessions into your daily schedule to re-energize your body and restore mental focus. Self-hypnosis at bedtime helps us fall asleep and sleep soundly through the night. Research shows that adequate sleep is basic for proper brain functioning, good health and optimal learning. This class is open to middle school and high school students (who often don’t sleep enough). You may reach Mary Willix with questions at 303-635-6632.

SELF-HYPNOSIS FOR RELAXATION & SOUND SLEEP
In this course students learn what hypnosis is, what it is not, and experience operator-induced hypnosis. Students will practice self-hypnosis between sessions. While the primary goal is relaxation, students may bring specific issues to work on in class (reducing pain, overcoming a specific fear, eating less or more healthily). We will read about sleep - what it is, why we need it, and see how hypnosis can help us get more of it. 3 two-hour sessions.

Your Brain and Your Health (Full)
C894, April 4-April 18, Fridays
10:30am-12:30pm
MAB 108 $30
We will explore what neuroscientists have discovered about the brain in recent years and what our brains need to remain healthy as we age. Professionals now know that a proactive lifestyle that promotes brain health develops brain reserves that may delay the onset of neuro-degenerative disease. Neurologist Richard Restak's The Naked Brain (2006) is our textbook, but students are encouraged to share information from other sources. Language professor Mary Willix taught at UCSD, Mesa College, North Seattle Community College and elsewhere. She is the author of two books and numerous articles. 3 sessions.

If you answered “yes” to 2 or more of the following questions, you area good candidate for self-hypnosis. Please be advised that if you have a medical sleep disorder, you need to be evaluated at a sleep clinic. If you have an emotional disorder, you need a medical evaluation. If you have been assessed for either and your medical provider recommends hypnosis, you are welcome to attend. Please let the instructor know that you have a medical referral.

Our primary goal is to learn relaxation techniques that will help you stay calm and focused throughout your day and to have the kind of good night’s sleep that allows you to wake up feeling refreshed. Our secondary goal is to look at recent research on the brain and sleep in the context of why staying grounded, calm and focused is important. Like meditation, yoga and other traditional forms of maintaining balance, self-hypnosis is a safe, practical tool that you can use for health and well-being.
